WiMAX Forum Names UQ Communications WiMAX Advanced Champion of the Year

Telecom operator recognized for exceptional implementation of WiMAX Advanced technology

Taipei, Taiwan – March 12, 2014 – WiMAX Forum, a global body that promotes the interoperability of broadband wireless products based upon IEEE 802.16 Standards, announced Japanese telecom operator, UQ Communications (UQC), the winner of the 2013 WiMAX Advanced Champion of the Year. The award was announced at the WiMAX Forum International Board of Directors meeting in Taipei.

The award program was established to honor broadband operators for demonstrating a commitment to the expansion of WiMAX Advanced (WiMAX 2+) networks. This past October, UQC became the first operator in the world to launch a commercial WiMAX 2+ network to their customers in central Tokyo, followed by rapid expansion to several key metropolitan areas. Within a few months of deployment commencement, the network has grown to include about 5,000 WiMAX Advanced base stations, offer seamless service between the mobile WiMAX and WiMAX Advanced platforms and delivering greatly improved capacity, up to 110 Mbps, to some of the 4 million UQC customers nationwide.
