Since our inception, ITRI has three mission statements: first, to expedite the development of new industrial technology; two, to aid in the process of upgrading industrial technology techniques; and three, to establish future industrial technology. However, in order to face a new economic era and serving as a nation's premiere technology research institute, ITRI must transform Taiwan's research capability from a “follower” to a “pioneer” in order to provide major advantage and opportunities for domestic industries.

As of today more than 60% of the ITRI's 6,000 employees hold either a Master's degree or PhD in their respective field of studies: Communication and Optoelectronics, Precision Machinery and MEMS, Materials and Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Technology, Sustainable Development, and Nanotechnology. Our focus on these six major fields will lay down the foundation for innovative research in the future of technological industry, and hence, transform our domestic industry into global bedrock for technological innovation.

Fosters CEO

As of 2006, over 160,000 alumni have graduated from ITRI, with more than 140,000 of them currently employed in the business community. Furthermore, more than 5,000 are in Hsinchu Science Park serving in mid to high level management positions, furthermore, more than 60 of our alumni are current domestic corporations CEO. ITRI believes we are not only providing revolutionary technological research, but we are also preparing individual talents for their various future endeavors, preparing them to be Taiwan's next generation of industrial pioneers.
In the past few years, ITRI has serviced various technological, research, and consulting services to more than 30,000 domestic companies annually, averaged over two thousand patent applications per year, three research symposiums per day, and four research collaboration opportunities. ITRI continues to be at the forefront of technological innovation and research capability, strengthening the overall domestic industrial research capability, and channeling those benefits to every related industry in Taiwan. In 1996, Open Lab was formed to nurture new start-ups and foster their developmental direction to maximize their R&D results. Since Open Lab's inception, there were 255 companies that have utilized the program, with 150 of them being start-ups. In all, ITRI invested more than 47 billion NTD and houses more than 7,500 employees under Open Lab.

ITRI's Position

As the global market becomes increasingly competitive, ITRI must take advantage of future opportunities. In taking the first step into the future, ITRI reorganized its internal structure and renewed research direction in 2006. ITRI's position in industrial technology industries is no longer simply a scientific research institute; it is actually an organization that leverages advance technology for economic improvement to bring about industrial development…. With generating economic values as the starting point, ITRI hopes to transform Taiwan from a technology leader to a valued pioneer, changing Taiwan from “production” to “creation”.
In the future, ITRI will strive to strengthen technological innovation and value creation ability, such that ITRI can be the technological pioneer, forging a path for all technological industries.
