Pisa, Italy – June 15th , 2009 – WiTechTM, a leading solutions, consulting and engineering company active in the BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) field, today announced it has completed the end-to-end integration of the network infrastructure built for the Mobile WiMAX Campus Lab initiative established in the Polo Tecnologico di Navacchio, a tech park near Pisa.
The Mobile WIMAX Campus Lab initiative aims at building one of the first complete end-to-end Mobile WiMAX multivendor picocellular networks in Europe compliant with the WiMAX Reference Model Profile C. This picocellular network provides an advanced lab environment and showcase that will be utilized to evaluate different configurations and usage scenarios, in order to assess costs and benefits of this new network model.
The aim of the picocelluar approach is basically that of overcoming the well known propagation problems of the WiMAX signal in urban and dense urban areas using smaller-dimension cells for a more pervasive coverage.
The Mobile WIMAX Campus Lab initiative was established through a collaboration agreement between Cubit (Consortium Ubiquitous Technologies), a consortium participated by the University of Pisa and some spin-off companies of the University of Pisa and Retelit, a leading Italian WiMAX Operator, in partnership with a number of national and international companies active in the WiMAX field, including Agilent Technologies, the world industry leader in testing equipment, WiChorus, an industry leader in smart 4G core infrastructure, WiNetworks, an innovative provider of unique WiMAX Pico Base Stations, Freemax, a recently established Italian WiMAX Virtual Network Operator, and WiTech.
“The Mobile WiMAX Campus Lab is an open environment and we hope that additional partners will join to increase the WiMAX ecosystem interoperability, as this will be one of the most important values of WiMAX networks in the next years” said Marco Magnarosa General Manager at Cubit.
WiTech has provided some of the key components of the WiMAX CSN (Connectivity Services Network) deployed for the Mobile WiMAX Campus Lab, including AAA, DNS/DHCP, Policy Function, Rating. These components are part of the WiTech WROP|CSN, the WiMAX-fine-tuned version of the WiTech WROP|Suite platform. WiTech was also responsible for the whole end-to-end integration of the network infrastructure, including the provision of key engineering services such as RNP (Radio Nerwork Planning), RNO (Radio Network Optimization) and Site Survey.
“WiTech can help operators and other players in the WiMAX ecosystem to evaluate the benefits of Mobile WiMAX Next-Generation Picocellular Networks and to ensure a fast, end-to-end, multivendor deployment” said Andrea Calcagno, Chief Executive Officer at WiTech.
