WiMAX mobile 4G communication operating in Lithuania sets an example for Europe

At an international conference, the Vilnius WiMAX event June 2010 held on 2 June in Vilnius, representatives of the global companies Intel and Samsung presented WiMAX 4G communication technological advantages and development trends and products and services for network implementation to communication network operators and representatives of communications regulatory authorities. Lithuanian Radio and TV Centre (LRTC) shared its experience with the implementation of the WiMAX network and provision of MEZON 4G internet services.
The Vilnius WiMAX event June 2010 attracted delegates from over thirty countries representing the telecommunication companies of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Estonia, Croatia, Latvia, Poland, Macedonia, France, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovak Republic, Germany, etc.
Mr Gediminas Stirbys, General Director of LRTC, in his statement about the competitive environment for 4G communication in Lithuania emphasised that the next generation MEZON internet based on WiMAX technologies offered strong advantages and had found its place in the market. The WiMAX network operates in as many as 43 cities and towns throughout Lithuania, with MEZON mobile 4G internet accessible to 50 per cent of the national population and network is still expanding.
‘That the global company Intel has initiated a conference in Vilnius and that Lithuanian experience using WiMAX technology has commanded considerable international attention suggest the exceptional achievements of our country in implementing next generation communication technologies. The implementation of innovations brings benefits to users in our country and is significant for our country on the international level’, Mr Mindaugas Petrauskas, Vice-Minister of the Economy of the Republic of Lithuania, stated at the conference.
Mr Aurimas Matulis, director of the Information Society Development Committee under the government of the Republic of Lithuania expressed his satisfaction that Intel presented its vision about the global development of WiMAX technology specifically in Vilnius and observed that LRTC has developed international centre of attraction not only serving as a gathering point for discussion about future achievement but also actually showing the way future mobile data transfer technologies work.
‘The very fact that the conference was attended by a considerable number of professionals from various countries taking interest in the Lithuanian experience is a great achievement by itself. Furthermore, representatives of communications operators attended not out of curiosity but with a specific purpose in mind, i.e. to gain knowledge beneficial for successfully competing in the national market. Lithuania is at the peak of mobile communications services, with LRTC demonstrating an example of the implementation and use of WiMAX 4G technology’, Mr Matulis said.
This conference in Lithuania was initiated by Intel, a global leader in the field of applying IT innovations. As Mr Krzysztof Janicki, Intel Regional Business Manager for Central and Eastern Europe put it, the conference was a success, with the number of participants exceeding the best expectations.
‘Telecentras was among the first to implement and start using WiMAX 4G technology and represents one of leaders in Central and Eastern Europe; therefore, the interactive presentation of the service with the possibility to see for themselves the way MEZON 4G internet works was undoubtedly useful to the participants of the event’, Mr Krzysztof Janicki stated.
LRTC is currently the only mobile 4G communication operator providing mobile internet services in the market of Lithuania. The company has participated in the global WiMAX forum since 2004 and launched MEZON 4G mobile internet services in Vilnius in March 2009. Last year MEZON 4G internet was awarded an Innovative Product Award.
