LRTC (Lithuanian Radio and Television Centre), the most influential broadcasting service provider and 4G Mobile WiMAX internet service provider in Lithuania reports a further expansion of its 4G WiMAX network. As a result, 60 percent of the population of Lithuania will be able to use mobile WiMAX internet service MEZON by the end of 2010. Currently about 3 million and 300 thousand inhabitants are living in the country.
4G internet MEZON can already be used in 44 locations of Lithuania. Following the launch of the commercial mobile internet service MEZON in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, within one year we extended the WiMAX communication network to five major cities of the country, the seaside resort towns, and many smaller towns and suburban areas,’ says Gediminas Stirbys, director general of LRTC.
He maintains that the company is building WiMAX base stations to increase coverage and is expanding MEZON internet accessibility in wider areas. It is planned that by 2012, 4G internet MEZON services will be available to users in almost all of Lithuania.
Mr. Stirbys emphasises that the development of the WiMAX network is a priority objective of the company seeking better MEZON customer satisfaction and encouraging the connection of new users.
LRTC has been a member of the WiMAX Forum since 2004 and obtained the license for Mobile WiMAX from the Lithuanian Communications Regulatory Authority in 2007.
In collaboration with Samsung, it started to implement a countrywide WiMAX network in 2008, and it officially announced the commercial launch of 4G mobile broadband internet MEZON service in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius in March 2009. Lithuania then became the first Central European country to use the next generation 4G Mobile WiMAX communication technologies.
LRTC is currently the only mobile 4G communication operator providing mobile internet service in the Lithuanian market. MEZON is also currently the fastest commercially available mobile internet on the market. A single sector of a 4G Mobile WiMAX network base station can ensure a bandwidth of up to 40 Mb/s. Users of the mobile 4G internet MEZON are offered connection speeds of up to 10 Mb/s.
In 2009, MEZON internet was awarded an ‘Innovative Product 2009’ prize at the Lithuanian Innovation Competition.
