Scope

The WiMAX Forum (WMF) develops “Releases” that provide developers (vendor companies) with a stable platform for implementation and to allow for the addition of new features driven by market factors. A WMF Release is typically built upon the previous Release. A Release develops new features and enhancements to some parts of the WiMAX System, while keeping the same functionality as in the previous Release for other parts of the WiMAX System.
A WiMAX Release comprises of a set of specifications (see Section 2). The “Release Manifest” provides the complete list of all specifications that make up that Release. Some of these specifications may be entirely new, not part of the previous Release, and may specify new features. Other specifications may be enhancements to specifications from a prior Release. Finally, some specifications may be carried forwardinto a release from the previous Release without any changes.
Most of the activity of a Release is focused on the development of new specifications or the update of existing specifications. Since the specifications are developed in different WMF Working Groups, a large degree of coordination needs to take place to ensure functional alignment and schedule alignment so that a coherent set of specifications are developed on time.
Once the Specifications are developed by the WMF, vendor companies implement products conforming to those specifications. The WMF then certifies the conformance of those products to the specifications.
